    PTFE membrane material
    The PTFE membrane material is a new rising constructional material and a compound material formed by painting PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethene, also called Teflon) resin on the extremely thin glass fiber (3μm). The PTFE membrane material has a stable shape and is a constructional membrane material that can bear certain loads. It’s well known as “6th constructional material” following brick, stone, concrete, steel and wood. It has a flexible texture and rich shapes, thoroughly breaking through the limitation of shape and span. It’s a soft sculpture that a designer fully reflects a creative space full of personal charm.

    It’s known that the membrane material is a kind of thin and neat surface material, while such a thin and neat surface material has been used for thousands of years. Although the plastic was known before the middle of 20nd Century, people had a sense that the membrane structure plays a more and more important role in the building field in recent tens of years. For example: the transparent thin membrane material is taken to fabricate the interlayer among air holes of sound proof window or all safety glass. Although it’s not known by most visitors, as a technical membrane material, the fluorin plastic plays a more than more important role in fabricating modern aviation and railway transportation tools.

     

    To smoothly complete a block of membrane structural building depends on many factors; in which the most visual and intuitionist is the construction membrane material in a large area. Quality and characteristics of the membrane material decide appearance and function of the building in a long term and client’s satisfaction. It’s basically characterized by cleanness and openness. In addition, surface effects of the membrane material also reflect the quality of plan, production and assembly.

     

    A key factor to decide a design if it’s feasible is whether the design can meet all requirements of the customer on the membrane material. Tensile force and elasticity are the important selection standard for the membrane material, because the building membrane material is a strongly flexible building factor, which can only be fixed by tensile force. Now, about 90% membrane structural projects are PVC membrane material, PTFE membrane material and ETFE membrane material in the world. 

     

    Since 1950s when German Frei Otto initiated PVC membrane material into the engineering in practice, the membrane material has been reformed in research and development for several times. Now, there are three types, PVC membrane material, PTFE membrane material and ETFE membrane material normally used at home and abroad. 

    PVC membrane material

    PVC membrane material is a compound material formed by painting PVC resin on polyester fiber cloth and its structure is as follows. In order to ensure the membrane has a strong anti aging performance, weatherproof performance, anti mold performance and self cleaning performance, the surface is specially treated.

    The membrane material surface is very important. The quality of surface treatment can affect the self cleaning performance of the membrane material, as well as service life, anti mould and anti ultraviolet performance of the membrane material. Now, there are three methods normally used for the membrane material treatment, acrylic, weldable PVDF and non weldable PVDF.

    The acrylic membrane material is generally used for tent, truck tarpaulin or advertisement cloth. It’s short in service life, low in tensile strength and generally not used for membrane structural buildings;

    The weldable PVC membrane material has a low density surface PVDF painting and little self cleaning performance, and a low price;

    The non weldable PVC membrane material has a high density surface PVDF painting, can’t be welded directly and is fabricated complexly, but it has notable self cleaning and more expensive than the weldable membrane material;

     

    The PVC membrane material has a comparatively low price and meets design requirements, so it’s widely used.

    PTFE membrane material

    The PTFE membrane material is one of membrane materials in commonest use in the world membrane structural building and has the following advantages:

    The PTFE membrane material has a highly strong mechanical performance.

    It is 0.8mm thick, but has a strong tensile strength. Its elastic modulus is largely lower than others, which is beneficial for forming a complex curved surface.

    The PTFE membrane material has an excellent optical performance.

    It can filter off most ultraviolet, prevent indoor fading, transmit natural light at 25% and emit natural and diffuse light without shadow and dizzy light, ensuring a sound color rendering property. Under common irradiation by interior lighting and exterior light at night, the membrane structure forms a bright translucency and has a strong visual impact.

    The PTFE membrane material has a superior acoustic performance.   

    The general membrane structure has a superior acoustic performance and is almost transparent at less than 60HZ. FABRASRB membrane structure can be used for structures with special absorption requirements and this combination has a strong acoustic absorption than glass.

    The PTFE membrane material has a superior fireproof performance.

    The constructional membrane material widely used in modern society has reached or is superior to many national fireproof standards, such as France, Germany, US, Japan and China, compliance with fireproof requirements and has superior flame retarding performance and high temperature resistance.

    The PTFE membrane material has a sound insulation performance.

    The single layer membrane material has the same insulation with brick wall, but better than glass. It’s the same with other material buildings that the many interior temperature regulation ways can be used inside membrane structural buildings.

    The PTFE membrane material has an independent self cleaning performance.

    It has a superior self cleaning performance to PVDF. Fluoro resin has non stickiness and waterproof performance. Dust and atmospheric dirt stacked on the surface can be washed by rainwater, keep permanent cleanness.

    Cost comparison between PTFE membrane material and PVC/PVCF membrane material: from a view of the whole project, the increased cost by the PTFE membrane material is not large; from a view of long term, PTFE can provide a longer service life and better self cleaning, as well as other advantages. It’s a considerably economic choice for owners. 

    ETFE membrane material

    ETFE is the abbreviation of Ethylene, Tetra, Flour and Ethylene. The ETFE membrane material has no cloth base and is composed of a layer of thin ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene membrane. It has a sound chemical stability without any other facial protection.

     

    Generally, the ETFE membrane material has a service life more than 30 years and good self cleaning. The flame retarding is at A1. The tensile strength is from 45 N/mm2 to 60N/mm2 according to the thickness of membrane material (0.012mm-0.5mm), and the transparency is more or less than 95%.
     
    Ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer is a material of scratch resistance, abrasion resistance, high temperature resistance, anti corrosion, insulation and high safety. It’s in superior light weight. The membrane material is thin and light. The aseismic performance is superior, beneficial for construction.

     

    Fine duration: applicable climate: -200~150℃ and more than 15 years’ bad climate. Mechanical performance and optical performance keep same.

     

    High tensile strength: the elongation at rupture is higher than 300%.

     

    High safety: the flame retarding material has no dropping substance after melting and shrinking. There is a little harm if encountering with fire. ETFE only has minor dent if the glass is broken in hailstone.

     

    Its surface is very smooth and has an excellent self cleaning performance. Dust and dirt can be removed by rain.

     

    The ETFE membrane is at B1 and DIN4102 fireproof standard and will not drop if burning. The membrane is light and 0.15-0.35kg per m2. It has considerable advantages even if the membrane is melted by smoke and fire.
     
    According to location and surface printing, the ETFE membrane has a transparence is at 95% and does not block ultraviolet to ensure the natural light is in the building. The translucency can be further reduced to 50% by surface printing. K value is up to 2.0W/m²K according to geometrical conditions and number of member layer. Energy consumption index is at 0.77 while a membrane printed with three layers is taken as an example. 
        
    Its excellent quality ensures no daily maintenance for the ETFE membrane. Mechanical damaged roof can be inspected simply (once per year is optimum) and repaired in-situ according to demands. Meanwhile, the ventilation system can be inspected to replace the filter device.
